May 2008: 100th Party
BRUNSWICK, MAINE, May 26, 2008 – Downeast Energy & Building Supply will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a free barbecue for the public and loads of exciting games and entertainment for the entire family. This centennial celebration will take place on Saturday, June 7 at the company headquarters, 18 Spring Street in Brunswick. The Morrell family, owners of the company since 1908, Maine Governor John Baldacci, U.S. Senator Susan Collins, Commissioner of Economic Development John Richardson and, of course, Captain Puffin, will be on hand to help celebrate this incredible milestone for the company and the entire community. The Governor has proclaimed June 7th as Downeast Energy & Building Supply day to commemorate this significant anniversary in business. A lot can change in 100 years. And, in many ways, that has been the case at Downeast Energy & Building Supply. As the Brunswick-based company celebrates its one hundredth anniversary, Downeast can look back with pride at a legacy of growth and ongoing innovation. But one thing that has held steady through that century of growth is the company's commitment to the utmost in customer care and service—a benchmark that stretches back to Downeast's founding in 1908. "That's always been our focus and will continue to be," says Dick Morrell who, with his brother Bob, joined their father's company in the 1950s. "It's never even occurred to us to approach things in any other manner." The company also has a longstanding history of community involvement. From its ongoing involvement in United Way throughout Maine and New Hampshire to participation by a number of Downeast employees in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Downeast has long known that being a true part of a community means taking a proactive, engaged role in the lives of their friends and neighbors. "We have always believed that this involvement is a critical component of our business," notes Bob. "Whether education, arts, human services or education, we pick projects that will benefit both our employees and the larger community." And the community and giving back will be the focus of this 100th Anniversary in business celebration.
